You may need to apply for the application with your high school diploma as well as transcripts from undergraduate studies in your home country when you choose to study abroad at a university. But to get admitted, do you need good grades? That depends on which university you are applying for and which programme you are applying for.
To become admitted at top ranked universities, you would need to get very good grades. When you want to become a doctor or research in other programs that are very common or challenging, the same can be true. However, if you are not qualified for the highest rated universities, it is not usually hard to get accepted as long as you have good marks.
It is obviously very important for you to speak good English when you are living in an English-speaking country. However, you won’t really need good English grades, since you can then demonstrate your English skills by taking a TOEFL or IELTS test. If your English is not good enough, you can start by preparing to take an English language course.
Otherwise, those relevant to what you want to know are the most significant topics. Key topics such as mathematics are also important since other major areas such as computer science, engineering or economics etc. require them. Upon graduation, several schools will also send a math test to their students to determine which courses they will take.
There’s nothing about your ratings, though. Even if you have straight A’s, if you are unable to have a decent portfolio, you might not be accepted to a prestigious school of design. At the same time, welcoming a student with poor grades but a fantastic portfolio might be really good. Many schools request students to submit a portfolio with their entry for subjects related to design.
Schools often ask for a personal letter and/or letters of reference that can also influence whether you are accepted or not. Make sure you put in your application your energy and submit as much as the school asks for. Submitting an unfinished form, regardless of the requirements, is the surest way not to get accepted. Rest assured that if you want to study abroad, there will be other options available for you, even though your results are not so good.
